Overview
PosterBox ("we," "our," or "us") is a digital movie poster display application for Fire TV, Android TV, and Google TV. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our data practices.
This Privacy Policy describes what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights with respect to that information. By using PosterBox, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
The short version: PosterBox is designed to display movie posters, not to collect your personal data. We collect only the minimum information required to operate the app and process optional premium subscriptions.
Information We Collect
PosterBox collects only the minimal data necessary to deliver its core functionality:
- App Settings & Preferences — Your display preferences (poster rotation timing, content rating filter, orientation, special themes) are stored locally on your device. We do not sync these to any external server.
- Device Identifiers — An anonymous device identifier may be used to associate your subscription status with your device. This identifier cannot be used to personally identify you.
- Crash Reports & Diagnostics — If the app crashes or encounters an error, anonymized diagnostic information may be collected automatically to help us improve stability. This data contains no personally identifiable information.
- Poster API Requests — When PosterBox downloads movie poster images, requests are made to our poster data provider. These requests include standard technical metadata (IP address, request timestamp) as processed by the provider's infrastructure.
What We Don't Collect
We believe in privacy by design. The following data is never collected by PosterBox:
- Your name, email address, or any personal contact information
- Your viewing history, watch habits, or media library contents
- Location data of any kind
- Voice or audio data
- Data from other apps on your device
- Browsing history or activity outside of PosterBox
- Any data sold to or shared with advertisers
No ads, ever. PosterBox does not display advertisements and does not share any data with advertising networks.
Subscriptions & Payments
PosterBox offers optional premium features through a monthly subscription. All subscription purchases and payment processing are handled entirely by the app store platform you use:
- Amazon Appstore — Purchases made through Fire TV are processed by Amazon. Amazon's Privacy Policy governs the handling of your payment and billing information.
- Google Play — Purchases made through Android TV or Google TV are processed by Google Play Billing. Google's Privacy Policy governs the handling of your payment and billing information.
PosterBox never receives, stores, or has access to your credit card numbers, billing address, or any other payment details. We only receive a confirmation token from the app store confirming that a valid subscription exists for your device.
Plex Integration
PosterBox offers optional integration with Plex media servers via Plex Webhooks. This feature allows your Plex server to communicate in real time with PosterBox, displaying the poster of the movie currently playing along with remaining playback time.
If you choose to enable Plex integration:
- Your Plex server sends webhook events (e.g., "playback started," "media title") to PosterBox's API endpoint.
- PosterBox uses this data solely to display the relevant movie poster on your TV.
- We do not store, log, or analyze your Plex library contents, playback history, or account credentials.
- Plex integration is entirely optional and can be disabled at any time in PosterBox settings.
Plex's own privacy practices are governed by Plex's Privacy Policy.
Third-Party Services
PosterBox relies on the following third-party services to operate:
- Movie Poster Database — Poster images and movie metadata are sourced from a third-party movie database API. Requests to this service include standard HTTP metadata. We do not share personal user data with this provider.
- Amazon Appstore — Governs app distribution and in-app purchases for Fire TV users.
- Google Play — Governs app distribution and in-app purchases for Android TV and Google TV users.
We do not sell, rent, or trade your information to any third party for marketing or advertising purposes.
Data Retention
Because we collect minimal data, our retention practices are straightforward:
- Local app settings are stored on your device and are deleted when you uninstall PosterBox.
- Anonymous crash/diagnostic data is retained only as long as necessary to diagnose and resolve issues, typically no longer than 90 days.
- Subscription tokens are retained only as long as your subscription remains active to verify your entitlement to premium features.
Children's Privacy
PosterBox is not directed at children under the age of 13 and we do not knowingly collect any personal information from children. PosterBox includes content rating filters that allow users to restrict poster content to age-appropriate ratings.
If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately at the address below and we will take steps to delete such information.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Effective Date" at the top of this page. For significant changes, we will make reasonable efforts to notify users — for example, through an in-app notice or by posting a notice on our website at posterbox.app.
Your continued use of PosterBox after any changes to this policy constitutes your acceptance of the updated terms. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
